Kladruby Monastery
The Kladruby Monastery is one of the most significant historical sites in western Bohemia. The former Benedictine monastery was founded in 1115 by Prince Vladislav I. Its most striking feature is the monumental Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was rebuilt between 1712 and 1726 by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel in the Baroque-Gothic style.
The new convent is the work of Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer.
After the monastery was dissolved during the reign of Joseph II, the complex served various purposes. In 1825, Field Marshal Alfred I Windischgrätz purchased it, and the Windischgrätz family resided there until 1945.
Today, the monastery offers several guided tours focusing on the life of the Benedictines, the history of the Windischgrätz family, and Santini’s unique architecture. The tour also includes the restored Paradise Courtyard with the monastery garden. During the summer season, cultural events, concerts, and fairs are held here.
The monastery is located less than 10 km from Stříbro and is a popular destination for day trips.
